In this project we learned about Homeostasis. Our group chose to learn about Body Temperature in Homeostasis. When it is hot outside, our bodies increase blood flow to our skin so we can cool down faster. Allowing our bodies to heat up is an example of hypothalamus. Hypothalamus helps regulate the temperature in our bodies. For this project one of us (control) took our initial body temperature and ran one lap around our school track. Immediately after running the lap, we used a thermometer to take the person's temperature to see if it increased. Then we waited 5 minutes and took the temperature again to see if the temperature returned to normal. We repeated these steps in different weather conditions. (sunny & cloudy) Our findings suggest that after physical activity our body temperature increases. But, because of homeostasis it returns to normal after a cool down period.
Homeostasis- balance of the body which regulates other bodily functions Temperature- degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object Thermometer- an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling. Timer- device that measures or records the amount of time taken by a process or activity. Celsius- temperature in which water freezes at 0° and boils at 100°

During this lab I learned how Homeostasis works and how it effects the human body. Our group researched Body Temperature in Homeostasis. We learned that when you exert your body to a certain point your overall body temperature goes up. Because of homeostasis it returns to normal after a cool down period. Our test subject started with a temperature of 32 degrees celsius. After running around the track his body temperature rose to 34 degrees celsius. After a five minute cool down period the subjects body temperature returned back to normal. I thought this project was a great way to learn more about the human body and how our bodies work. Prior to this lab I didn't realize that breathing heavily and sweating are ways that your body shows homeostasis. The body is amazing! I also learned more about writing a scientific article. Peaks were that we did really well on time management. Also, our group worked well together and we shared a common interest in this topic since we all have a love of sports. For pits, unfortunately the weather didn't always cooperate for us. Another major pit was that two of our group members were not there the day we were supposed to present, so we had to do it at a later date. I wish that this lab allowed us to create our own way of collecting data instead of following directions that were given. I think we could have tested more subjects or male vs female students to see if there were any differences. Overall this lab was a great way to learn and a fun way to collect data.
